THINKING GREEN - by Mary Ann Hodge
To follow up on the topic of lawn care, check out http://ontariogrowerssupply.com/ for great tips including a natural product they use to control dandelions. WAYS TO MAKE A DIFFERNCE
- GET INFORMED AND GET INVOLVED
Read books, newspapers, watch films and DVDs about global warming. Talk to your neighbours, about ways to reduce global warming.
- FLY LESS
- TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORT (walk, bike, car-pool).
- TAKE CARE OF YOUR TRASH
Composting all organic waste - and recycling paper, cardboard cans and bottles - will help reduce the greenhouse gas emissions associated with landfills.
- CREATE AN ENERGY EFFICIENT HOME
- Look for the "EnergyStar" label when purchasing new appliances, and replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs.
- Remember to switch off lights when you leave a room and unplug all appliances that are not being used.
- Purchase your electricity from sustainable energy sources.
- Alternatively, consider purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates, which are like using green power.
- Get your home an energy audit.
- Many communities now have local groups that will come into your home and give you an energy audit.
- EAT WISELY
Choose seasonal foods.
- IF YOU BUY A CAR . . .
- Make fuel efficiency a top priority.
- Think about the day ahead and plan your run to accommodate as many errands as you can at once.
- IF YOU BUY PAPER PRODUCTS
Ask, does this facial tissue and toilet paper come from Ancient Forests? Canada's boreal forest is getting wiped away by disposable tissue products. Be a part of the solution
Top 5 things you can do:
- Use reusable cloth products instead of disposable products like paper towels, facial tissues or napkins
- When you buy disposable products, don't flush ancient forests, buy recycle
- Educate everyone you know about the importance of using;g recycled products
- Lead your communities to adopt polices to buy recycled paper products
- Demand more action on forest protection from companies and government;ents
Green products are made from 100% recycled paper fibre but each product has varying degrees of post-consumer waste, the amount that comes directly fro recycled paper that would otherwise b thrown away, the higher percentage of post-consumer recycled fibre the better.
