FAQ: How can I arrange a funeral at the church?

Do I have to be a member?

If you have a loved one with a connection to First-St. Andrew's (either as a member or an adherent) you might be thinking of the possibility of holding the funeral or celebration of life, in the church. This option is available to you provided we do not have a competing booking and is also open to anyone when a particularly large attendance is anticipated at an upcoming funeral. Your funeral director will have had experience in setting this up but, if you are seeking some more information, see below.

What church spaces are available?

The Sanctuary is ideal for small or large gatherings, holding up to 600 people. Our glass atrium entrance makes a large welcoming area before and after the service. There is an elevator at the church entrance which provides access to multiple levels. The Chapel provides an intimate setting for a small service of 50 or fewer, or for visitation. The Church Parlour is ideal for family to meet and prepare themselves before entering into the formal funeral setting. Proudfoot Hall is perfect for receptions with its adjacent kitchen. Check out these spaces on our church rentals page.

Can we also hold the reception at the church?

Receptions can be held in our bright Proudfoot Hall, which accommodates approximately 250 people. It can be set up in any configuration of seating that you choose (or perhaps no seating at all. Catering arrangements are sometimes available through the church but you can also select an "outside" caterer of your choice for food and service. We are able to provide the names of several caterers who know our facilities, if you wish a referral. There is a projection screen available in the hall should you elect to run a slide presentation during the reception. You can speak to us about the availability of a laptop and projector for this purpose.

What about music?

Music will be provided by our Minister of Music, or call 519-679-8182. You may wish to discuss about engaging a soloist or special instrumentalists. You can discuss fees for musicians at that time.

Details

Photos: Photos and/or mementos may be displayed at the front during the service.

Greeters at the door: A minimum of two greeters is recommended to welcome guests and direct them from the outside door of the church to the Sanctuary. If you have engaged a funeral director, this service is likely provided. If not, you will want to designate a couple of people to handle this aspect. There is a driveway that comes right up to the church door and people enter the church on the level. There are no stairs to climb. For those who prefer not to climb stairs once inside, there is an elevator just inside the door that will let people off just outside the Sanctuary door.

Parking: On-site parking is limited. There is street-parking available. The meters on Waterloo Street can be reserved for funerals if you request and will then be marked with blue "funeral" covers. Your funeral director will handle this aspect for you.

What are the fees?

You can discuss the current fee schedule when you meet with the minister. A cheque for the fee for use of church facilities should be made out to “First-St. Andrew’s United Church.” Fees for the minister and the musicians are separately negotiated.
